FALL RIVER, Mass. (WJAR) — In a storefront on North Main Street in Fall River it’s called Gnome Create.

And throughout the store are signs with positive messages such as “Love Never Fails” and “Do Something Good Today””It’s basically a positivity center for kids, we have art classes, paint nights,” said founder and Fall River resident Christopher Antao.

A full time bank executive and former Durfee High Wrestling Coach, Antao says Gnome Create is an extension of the surf school he started in 2015 called Gnome Surf Academy.

“We have a lot of kids with autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, but you only get three or four months out of the year for surfing here in New England, this was a way to keep the positivity going and the concept,” he said.

And in case you’re wondering, the name comes from a Gnome he picked up in Germany which is displayed in the store, but the idea itself stemmed from something that happened to him last year.

He discovered someone had spray painted graffiti on his fence outside his Highland Avenue home.

He replaced the graffiti with a window box and positive messages that now adorn the entire length of the white fence, messages he wants to instill in the community, in particular kids in need.

Antao wants Gnome Create, which collaborates with local artists, to be that catalyst for change.

“We sell apparel, we sell art, kids can come in and design their own T-Shirt, physically make it and leave with it that day,” said Antao.

Gnome Create offers activities for both children and adults, several times a week, activities Antao says are affordable.

“You’re talking make your own hat night, it’s $15 for slice of pizza, juice box, and the hat and they physically design it and make it,” he said.

All proceeds from those activities and others sales at the store are going to Antao’s ultimate goal of creating the nonprofit Project Happy Camp, what he describes as Disney for kids in need.
