Youth Mentorship

At Gnome Surf Therapy, mentorship isn’t just about building character—it’s about building legendary summers, friendships, and futures. Here, mentorship isn’t a single program—it’s an ecosystem of growth, leadership, and connection. Our Good Vibes Tribe (all girls team), Sons of Poseidon (all boys team), and Junior Instructor Program are where big-hearted kids laugh, learn, and grow into the leaders our world needs.

...confidence, a place to fully be her authentic self, community, a place where she can strive to be a part of as she ages, like volunteering and her goal of being an instructor

A Gnome Athlete’s Parent, when asked about the impact of the youth mentorship program

Why It’s a Blast (and a Big Deal):

Surf + Life Skills = Unstoppable Kids: Neurotypical and neurodivergent youth team up in the water, tackling waves and stereotypes. They don’t just ride boards—they learn patience, adaptability, and how to cheer for others louder than they cheer for themselves.

Junior Instructor Program: Master surf skills, earn mentorship certifications, and graduate ready to coach alongside our team. Spoiler: We’re always scouting future hires. (And yes, we’re biased—but teaching here is the most rewarding job on Earth.)

Zero Boredom, All Belonging: Think beach games, team challenges, and "aha!" moments where kids realize kindness is cooler than cliques.

For Parents Who Want More Than a Summer Activity

This is legacy-building. Your child won’t just join a program—they’ll join a family. And who knows? That first high-five they give a nervous athlete might just be the start of a career in surf therapy that changes lives (including theirs).

The Sequence to Success Pathway

Join the Grom Squad Surf Team → Join the Jr. Instructor Program → Become an Assistant Instructor → Graduate to a full Surf Instructor

  • With mentorship and leadership in mind, our mentors provide hands-on experience and real time feedback to guide youth and rising instructors into becoming kind, empathetic, and epic surf instructors and even better people.

Got a Kid Who Loves to Lead (or Wants to Learn How)?

What is the Grom Squad Surf Team?

The Grom Squad Surf Team (Son’s of Poseidon = Boys Team and the Good Vibes Tribe = Girls Team) is for youth who want to grow their surf skills while learning teamwork, goal-setting, and social-emotional skills. Each week, athletes train together in and out of the water, forming friendships and learning how to support and encourage one another like a true surf family.

What is the Junior Instructor Program?

The Junior Instructor Program is the next step in the mentorship journey. Participants ages 12 and up begin shadowing instructors, learning ocean safety, surf instruction, and leadership techniques. With guidance from our trained clinicians and surf professionals, they build the foundation to one day become certified instructors.

Can participation count toward community service or volunteer hours?

Yes! Time spent volunteering, assisting instructors, and supporting athletes through the Junior Instructor Program often qualifies for community service credit. It’s a meaningful way to give back while learning valuable life and leadership skills.

How does the program benefit participants beyond surfing?

Youth in the program gain real-world skills in communication, empathy, and self-regulation. They build friendships, learn how to lead by example, and gain confidence that extends beyond the beach—helping them grow into resilient, compassionate leaders in all areas of life.
